Idris Elba’s brilliant comedy series IN THE LONG RUN continues tonight on SkyOne at 10pm and you can see GORDON KANE play David.

So far, the series has only briefly touched on the casual racism of the 1980s, dealing more with cultural misunderstandings than prejudiced attitudes. But this week’s episode confronts it head-on, as Walter’s goddaughter Cynthia gets engaged to a white boy from a small Scottish village. Naturally his parents are gaffe-prone ignoramuses, but the real problem is Cynthia’s dad, who doesn’t like the idea of his daughter marrying into a family whose previous experience of black people is “that family on EastEnders”. It may sound heavy-handed but it all zips along in a whirl of bright African prints, witty one-liners, good sight gags and plenty more of those cultural mix-ups.
